![]() Hip replacement surgery The patient , Ashish Das (42) is from S.N Palli, Belonia who has been suffering from Ankylosing Spondylitis which led to his hip joints getting fused and immovable and had to be ultimately replaced by an artificial hip. This type of Operation is very rare i,e it accounts for 3 - 4% of total hip replacements in India. Dr Rajput says that he finds this kind of disease to be common to Tripura rather than in Kolkata or elsewhere. The reason could be varied he says, ranging from infection by a virus to heredity to genetic makeup of the people of Tripura. The cost for this complicated operation in GENET run TMC and Dr B R Ambedkar Memorial Teaching Hospital was about Rs 4 lakh. This includes all expenditure. Cost for a similar operation would have cost more than Rs 6 lakh in any hospital outside Tripura. For conducting such operation outside the state would also add additional expenditure for transportation and months long stay of the patient and his/her escorts outside of the state. The TMC and Dr BR Ambedkar Memorial Teaching Hospital is well equipped with state of the art sophisticated machinery to handle this kind of operation where the patient may need ICCU support. Though initially expensive this implant is designed to last 30 – 40 years and hence better than the implants which are cheaper but would last only 15 years. Dr Rajput also said that GENET run TMC had launched a special knee replacement package for Tripura people costing Rs 99,000/- (all inclusive). Like Dr Rajput, every month Super specialist doctors of repute are attending patients in Tripura Medical College & Dr B.R Ambedkar Memorial Teaching Hospital and performing rare and difficult surgeries. Dr Rajput said that the people of Tripura need not travel to Kolkata and South India for such treatment any more as it is being brought by TMC & Dr BRAM Teaching Hospital to the doorsteps of the people of the state. |
